Fabien Barthez has shown he’s just as handy behind the wheel as he was between the posts. The former Manchester United goalkeeper cracked open the champagne this weekend after being crowned champion of France’s GT motorsport series. Barthez and Sofrev ASP team-mate Morgan Moullin-Traffort finished fifth and eight respectively in the last two races of the championship’s concluding weekend at the Paul Ricard circuit near Marseille. And after two wins and four podium finishes throughout the season, that proved enough to claim the title with a total of 174 points – 21 better than their nearest rivals in a series that counts nine-time world rally champion Sebastian Loeb among its competitors. Ex-France international Barthez took up motor racing shortly after retiring from football in 2007 and hasn’t looked back. The 42-year-old 1998 World Cup winner said of his passion for the sport: ‘I have always been fascinated by motorsport, even when I was playing football. It always intrigued me. ‘I wanted to understand what it felt like being in a car. ‘I wanted to understand what it felt like being in a car. I had to wait until the end of my pro career to try.
