Marco van Ginkel out for the season after having cruciate ligament surgery.
Marco van Ginkel’s first season at Chelsea has come to a premature end with the midfielder undergoing surgery on his torn anterior cruciate ligaments.
Van Ginkel has gone under the knife after picking up a knee injury during the Blues’ Capital One Cup win over Swindon on Tuesday.
Boss Jose Mourinho had admitted at the time he was concerned about the 20-year-old and an MRI scan yesterday confirmed he had torn the ACL and would need surgery.
It is understood Van Ginkel has now had treatment on the injury and will now look to return next pre-season with agent Rob Jansen telling the Dutch press he won’t play again this term.
The news will come as a huge blow to Chelsea manager Mourinho, who had earmarked Van Ginkel as a long-term replacement for Frank Lampard and had planned to use him more in the closing stages of the season.
The injury also means the midfielder, who was an £8million signing from Vitesse Arnhem, will not feature for Holland at the World Cup in Brazil
